The overabundance of information, prevalence of mis- and disinformation, and information systems that reinforce inequalities have raised new challenges for instructors and students that require us to reimagine methods for teaching information literacy. How do we help students sift through the incredible volume of information they are confronted with daily, minimize their susceptibility to mis- and dis-information, and ensure they act responsibly in their consumption and dissemination of information? How do we help students understand how information systems reinforce inequalities? In this session, we will reflect on the meaning of information literacy, apply research on affective, cognitive and social aspects of learning and information consumption to strategies for promoting information literacy, and consider how empathy intersects with developing information literacy.

This 3-part workshop will meet in person on the following dates:
