Teaching in the Disciplines: Teaching Modern Languages - Lunchtime Book Group: While We’re on the Topic by Bill VanPatten In-Person

"I took four years of French and can’t speak a word.” When language instructors hear people say this, it makes us wonder what is happening in the classroom. In this book group series, we will read Bill VanPatten’s While We’re on the Topic and discuss other views on how to teach language effectively so that we help students become proficient. We will examine questions such as: What are we actually expecting students to learn and how do we know they’ve learned it? What does risk-taking in the language classroom look like and how do we help students embrace it? What is the role of grammar instruction in our courses? Join your colleagues for a lively discussion on learning languages in the 21st century.

This book group will be held in three sessions:
