Classic Book Group: The Ignorant Schoolmaster by Jacques Rancière (Hosted Online via Zoom) In-Person

Inspired by the student protests in France in May 1968, this short work allegorizes the power relations between students and instructors by telling the tale of Joseph Jacotot, an educational reformer of the 18th century. Rancière argues that the liberatory potential of education can only be realized when the role of instructor expertise in the classroom is reconsidered. In this book group, we’ll explore what lessons can be drawn from both Rancière in the 20th century and Jacotot in the 18th and how they might apply to our own classrooms.
