When Students Won’t Talk: Successful Synchronous Discussions In-Person

From STEM fields to the visual arts, every discipline benefits from discussion-based learning. But what do we do if students don't talk? This workshop invites you to consider ways to set your discussion up for success in advance. We’ll investigate the kinds of teacher-discourse moves that best generate critical thinking and student learning; evaluate teacher question types and student conversational roles for better student discussions; and reflect on how to grade and give feedback on participation. Come prepared to share and learn from your friends and colleagues! All Temple instructors and staff are welcome.
