Successful Synchronous Discussions: What to Do When Students Won’t Talk In-Person

Discussion and discourse-based pedagogies offer rich and engaging learning opportunities that our students benefit from in any discipline, from STEM fields to the visual arts. But what do we do if students don't talk? This workshop invites you to collaborate with your peers as we: Brainstorm ways to set your discussion up for success in advance; Investigate the kinds of teacher-discourse moves that best generate critical thinking and student learning; Evaluate teacher question types and student conversational roles that support better student discussions; and Reflect on how to assess the efficacy of discussion-based participation. Come prepared to share and learn from your friends and colleagues! All Temple instructors and staff are welcome.
