Light Reading: Is This the End of Reading? In-Person

In this light reading group, we will discuss Beth McMurtrie's revealing Chronicle of Higher Education essay “Is This the End of Reading?”. McMurtrie examines why professors across disciplines are seeing dramatic changes in students' reading abilities and habits. Through concrete examples - from a biology professor who now must teach basic note-taking skills, to data showing only 17% of teens read daily for pleasure in 2020 (down from 35% in 1984) - McMurtrie traces how smartphones, pandemic disruptions, rising student anxiety and changing K-12 practices have transformed student learning. We'll explore innovative solutions emerging from the field, like Theresa MacPhail's "course on failure" that helps students tackle difficult texts, while examining the broader question: Are we witnessing a fundamental shift in how young people process and engage with information? All Temple instructors and staff are welcome!
