Creating Connection: Using Canvas to Promote Student Belonging (Facilitated Asynchronous Course) In-Person

Whether they’re learning online or in person, students spend a significant amount of time interacting with you, the instructor, their fellow students, and course content in Canvas. This asynchronous course explores how we can best use Canvas to create a warm, welcoming learning environment that will motivate students and encourage them to persist. We will demonstrate how tools such as SpeedGrader, discussion boards and Canvas Collaborations encourage interaction and collaboration. You will consider how the presentation of course materials, framing language used throughout the course, and options for helping students see you and one another support community-building and connection. By the end of the course, you will be equipped with practical tools and insights to create a more inclusive and connected learning space for your students, no matter the mode of delivery.

This course is self-paced. CAT facilitators will be present in the course from December 11th to December 20th, during which time you will have the opportunity to interact with us and other faculty in the course, complete activities, and receive feedback. Course activities will require an approximate time commitment of 2-3 hours. All Temple instructors and staff are welcome.

Facilitators: Dana Dawson, Associate Director, CAT; Denise Hardiman, Manager of EdTech Lab Services, CAT
