Can We Really Talk? Session 1: The Role of the Media on Class Discussions Involving Race, Religion, and Politics (Hosted in person) In-Person

Amid ongoing global conflicts, student protests, a polarizing presidential election, and the persistent volatility of race issues, media coverage of these topics plays a crucial role in shaping how we teach a wide range of subjects on college campuses across the country. This session will explore how to acknowledge, teach, and discuss religion, race, and politics with students, including enhancing our own understanding of these sensitive issues. Additionally, we will examine how the media influences the examples and perspectives students bring to class--including mis/disinformation, and consider the challenges and benefits this presents when navigating such topics. Please join Professors David Brown and Timothy Welbeck for this important discussion ahead of the upcoming Presidential election.

Guest Facilitators: David W. Brown, Assistant Dean of Community and Communication, Klein College of Media and Communication; Dr Timothy Welbeck, Director, Center for Anti-Racism, Temple University

Moderator: Linda Hasunuma, Associate Director, CAT
