Can We Really Talk? Session 1: Teaching about Racism Through the Lens of the Media (Hosted in person) In-Person

Even after the verdict in such prominent cases like the Supreme Court’s ruling on Affirmative Action or the incessant racially motivated violence throughout the country, the prevalence of race and how it is covered in the media remains one of the most important issues of the day. This session will explore how to acknowledge, teach and talk about racism with students (including our own understanding of this sensitive topic). Additionally, we will discuss how media influences the examples and perspectives students bring to class and consider the challenges and benefits it presents when navigating such topics.

Guest Facilitator: David W. Brown, Assistant Dean, Klein College of Media and Communication
