Light Reading Group: AI Tutoring Outperforms In-class Active Learning? In-Person

A Harvard-based study published in June 2025 offers a provocative claim: students using a carefully designed AI tutor learned more than students in an active-learning classroom. Join colleagues for a one-time, 60-minute discussion of Kestin et al., “AI tutoring outperforms in-class active learning: an RCT introducing a novel research-based design in an authentic educational setting” to consider what this finding supports and what remains uncertain. We’ll explore how the study’s design shapes its conclusions, which questions deserve further investigation, and what the research might mean for faculty making decisions about AI. Assigned reading for this Light Reading Group is limited to the Kestin et al. 2025 article.
