Light Reading: Holes in the Web In-Person

In this light reading group, we will discuss the essay "Holes in the Web" by Deepak Varuvel Dennison. Dennison examines how generative AI is accelerating the loss of Indigenous and local knowledge, drawing upon both his research on AI and his personal experiences. The essay traces how AI design choices combine with colonial legacies to privilege certain types and sources of information and to prioritize a narrow set of epistemologies (for example, Dennison cites data from Common Crawl, one of the largest public sources of training data for large language models, showing that Hindi accounts for only 0.2% of its data despite being spoken by 7.5% of the world's population). We will consider the implications of Dennison’s essay for our work in higher education and for our students’ learning. All Temple instructors and staff are welcome.
